14,000 Domains Dropped Dyn’s DNS Service After Mirai Attack

chicksdaddy
New data suggests that some 14,500 web domains stopped using Dyn’s Managed DNS service in the immediate aftermath of an October DDoS attack by the Mirai botnet. That’s around 8% of the web domains using Dyn Managed DNS… “The data show that Dyn lost a pretty big chunk of their customer base because they were affected by (Mirai),” said Dan Dahlberg, a research scientist at BitSight Technologies in Cambridge, Massachusetts… BitSight, which provides security rating services for companies, analyzed a set of 178,000 domains that were hosted on Dyn’s managed DNS infrastructure before and immediately after the October 21st attacks.
It’s possible some of those domains later returned to Dyn — and the number of actual customers may be smaller than the number of hosted domains. But in the end it may not have mattered much, since Dyn was acquired by Oracle the next month, and TechCrunch speculates that the deal had already been set in motion before the attack. They also add that “Oracle, of course, is no stranger to breaches itself: in August it was found that hundreds of its own computer systems were breached.”

Newegg Sues Patent Troll After Troll Dropped Its Own Lawsuit

WheezyJoe writes: Not satisfied that a patent troll dropped its lawsuit against them, Newegg has sued the troll. So-called “patent holding company” Minero Digital sought to exact royalty payments on a wide range of USB hubs, suing, among others, Newegg’s subsidiary Rosewill. But the “non-practicing entity” dropped its East Texas lawsuit against Rosewill within days of getting a call from the Newegg’s lawyer. However, Minero dismissed its Texas lawsuit “without prejudice”, meaning it can refile the case at a time of its choosing. So, Newegg filed its own lawsuit against Minero in Los Angeles federal court, asking a judge to lay down a ruling that Minero’s case against Rosewill is baseless. Says Newegg’s Chief Legal Officer Lee Cheng, “Minero’s case does not have merit, and its patent is not only expired but would suck even if it wasn’t expired. Now that they have started the litigation, it would be irresponsible for Newegg to not finish it.”

14-Year-Old Boy Placed On Police Register After Sending Naked Picture To Classmate

Ewan Palmer reports: A teenage boy in the UK has had a crime of making and distributing indecent images recorded against him after he sent a naked picture of himself to one of his female classmates. The 14-year-old was not formally arrested after he sent the explicit image to a girl of the same age via Snapchat. The police file against the boy will now remain active for 10 years, meaning any future employer conducting an advanced Criminal Records Bureau check will be aware of the incident. However, it is not clear whether a police file was recorded for the girl who saved and shared the image. Under new legislation, if she had been over 18, the girl could have been convicted under the so called ‘revenge porn’ law in the UK.
